There is an ultramarathon that takes place in summer titled ‘Race to the stones‘. My running partner is interested in doing this next year so we decided to see what some of the terrain and course was like for our bank holiday Monday run.
The race takes part along a trail called The Ridgeway which totals a length of 87 miles. The trail starts at Avenbury but we started at Overton Hill where there is a car park. It is a fairly gradual climb up to the point of interest, Barbury Castle Iron Age Fort.
The terrain is pretty tough at the beginning, up and down with lumpy ground that involves being light-footed and observant. Before you get to Barbury Castle the path does improve with some flatter, wider parts.
If required, a toilet block is located just the other side of the fort.
Once past the fort, the route then continues to Ogbourne St George which is a gentle decent across Smeathe’s Ridge. There are also some pretty great views from here too. We hit the start of the village at around 9 miles so that was our point to turn around and head back.
We completed our run in 3:35 at just over 18 miles and just as it started to pour with rain.
